Parsha Halacha – Parshat Beha’alotecha Zechariah ben Berechiah One of the Last Prophets Sponsored by the Fishman cousins of Los Angeles in memory of Maureen Liner, Mintza Brocha bas Moshe ‫ע"ה‬, who left us too soon on the 9th of Sivan 5770/May 21, 2010. • ‫“ – אֲ נִּ י קָ צַ פְ תִּ י מְ עָ ט וְהֵ מָ ה עָ זְ רּו לְ ָרעָ ָֽ ה‬I [G-d]was slightly angry, and they assisted to make it worse.”28 This verse is quoted to explain why the Egyptians were punished for oppressing the Jewish people when the persecution was already decreed by the Almighty. • ‫“ – כִּ י כְ אַ ְרבַ ע רּוחֹות הַ שָ מַ יִּם פֵ ַרשְ תִּ י אֶ תְ כֶם‬I have spread you (the Jewish people) like the four winds.” Based on this verse, the Talmud (Ta’anit 3b) says that the Jewish people are compared to the wind, and the world can’t exist without them. • ‫“ – עֹ ד יֵשְ בּו זְ קֵ נִּ ים ּוזְ קֵ נֹות בִּ ְרחֹ בֹות יְרּושָ לָ יִּם וְאִּ יש מִּ שְ עַ נְתֹו בְ יָדֹו מֵ רֹב יָמִּ ים‬There shall yet be elderly men and women in the squares of Jerusalem, each with a staff in 22 Isaiah 8:2 23 Makkot 24b 24 6:14 25 Zechariah 1:7 26 Ibid 7:1 27 Zechariah 1:8 28 Ibid verse 15 29 Ibid, 2:8 30 Ibid 4:10 4 hand because of their great age.”31 See Makot 24b where Rabbi Akiva quoted this verse to the sages. • ‫צֹום הָ ְרבִּ יעִּ י וְצֹום הַ חֲ מִּ ישִּ י וְצֹום הַ שְ בִּ יעִּ י וְצֹום הָ עֲשִּ ירִּ י יִּהְ יֶה לְ בֵ ית־יְהּודָ ה לְ שָ שֹון ּולְ שִּ מְ חָ ה‬ ‫“ – ּולְ מֹ ע ֲִּדים טֹובִּ ים וְהָ אֱ מֶ ת וְ הַ שָ לֹום אֱ הָ בּו‬The fast of the fourth month (the 17th of Tammuz), the fast of the fifth month (the Ninth of Av), the fast of the seventh month (Tzom Gedaliyah), and the fast of the tenth month (the 10th of Tevet) shall become occasions for joy and gladness, happy festivals for the House of Judah, but you must love honesty and integrity.”34 See Rambam, Laws of Fasts, 5:19. • ‫“ – אֶ שְ ְרקָ ה לָ הֶ ם וַאֲ קַ בְ צֵ ם כִּ י פְ ִּדיתִּ ים‬I will whistle to them and gather them, for I will redeem them.”36 The Lubavitcher Rebbe quoted this verse37 in connection to the fact that he would, occasionally, encourage people to whistle at the farbrengens. • ‫“ – הִּ נֵה מַ לְ כְֵך יָבֹוא לָ ְך צַ ִּדיק וְנֹושָ ע ה
