Bamidbar is also known as Sefer ha’Pekudim, the Book of Counting, and in our parsha, Hashem commands Moshe to take a census of the nation, all males between the ages of twenty and sixty, able bodied and ready to go out to battle (at this point, the nation believes it is journeying directly into the Holy Land, where it will battle against the Canaanite nations, the inhabitants of the land). The Medrash (Bamidbar Rabbah 1:7) teaches: ‫ מִּכָאן ׁשָנּו חֲכָמִים ּבִׁשְלׁשָה ְדבִָרים‬,‫ לָּמָה ּבְמְִדּבַר סִינַי‬,(‫ א‬,‫וַיְַדּבֵר ה' אֶל מׁשֶה ּבְמְִדּבַר סִינַי )במדבר א‬ ,‫ ּובַּמַיִם מִּנַיִן‬.'‫ וְהַר סִינַי עָׁשַן ּכֻּלֹו וגו‬:(‫ יח‬,‫ ּבָאֵׁש מִּנַיִן )שמות יט‬.‫ ּובַּמְִדּבָר‬,‫ ּובַּמַיִם‬,‫ ּבָאֵׁש‬,‫נִּתְנָה הַּתֹוָרה‬ ,‫ ּובַּמְִדּבָר מִּנַיִן וַיְַדּבֵר ה' אֶל מׁשֶה ּבְמְִדּבַר סִינַי‬.‫ ּגַם ׁשָמַיִם נָטָפּו ּגַם עָבִים נָטְפּו מָיִם‬:(‫ ד‬,‫ׁשֶּנֶאֱמַר )שופטים ה‬ ‫ ׁשֶּנֶאֱמַר‬,‫ אֶּלָא מָה אֵּלּו חִּנָם לְכָל ּבָאֵי הָעֹולָם ּכְָ ּדִבְֵרי תֹוָרה חִּנָם הֵם‬,‫וְלָּמָה נִּתְנָה ּבִׁשְלׁשָה ְדבִָרים הַּלָלּו‬ ‫ הֹוי ּכָל צָמֵא לְכּו לַּמַיִם‬:(‫ א‬,‫)ישעיה נה‬ And Hashem spoke to Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai (Bamidbar 1:1). ‫ הִוא‬,‫מֵעֵבֶר לַּיָם‬-‫וְֹלא‬, it is not across the seas on a remote island that we need sailors to sail the seas and retrieve it for us; ,‫ָקרֹוב אֵלֶיָ הַּדָבָר‬-‫ּכִי‬ ‫ לַעֲׂשֹתֹו‬,ְָ‫ מְאֹד ּבְפִיָ ּובִלְבָב‬- for it is very very close to us, in our mouths and in our hearts to learn and to do (Devarim 30:11-14).
