(Jerusalem Talmud, Rosh HaShana, ch.1) Sounding the Shofar Rabbi Saadia Gaon gives ten reasons for sounding the shofar on Rosh HaShana, among them: At the beginning of a reign, it is custom- ary to sound trumpets before the newly crowned king, and to proclaim his ascent to sovereignty throughout the realm. However, in the chassidishe shuls they would cry louder by the words, ‘But You are the King’, recognizing and accepting Hashem’s kingship.” Before Rosh Hashanah, 5640, the Rebbe Maharash requested his helper to relate the following to the chassidim: “That which is written that the blowing of the shofar is like the cry ‘Father, Father’, the main thing is the ‘сгу’.” That Rosh HaShanah, the entire village, clamored with remorseful weeping. "I asked the King Moshiach, 'Master, when are you com- ing?' And he replied: 'When your wellsprings [teachings] will be disseminated out- ward." From this reply it is apparent that the Baal Shem Tov's teachings, Chassidus, are close- ly connected with the coming of Moshiach. One Rosh Hashanah, when the Alter Reb- be reached the words in maariv, “V’ten Pachdecha” (and so instill fear of You), he rolled on the floor saying, “pach, pach,” and was unable to finish the word for some time because of his great fear. It is quite possible that many of us will be con- cerned with our own wants, personal de- sires or needs, forgetting the larger picture — that the world as a whole is being judged and we are but a small speck in this immense picture. “T noticed an interesting difference: In most shuls, they would cry out with most feeling by the words, ‘But Repentance, Prayer and Charity avert the severity of the decree,’ being concerned for their welfare for the upcoming year.
