By the fact that the Israelites experienced brutal slavery in Egypt, in spiritual terms the lowest place in the world, and then were able to leave in the miraculous Exodus, the first steps of a transformation of the world were achieved, making the Giving of the Torah possible. The discourse explains that the Divine Name Elokim has two aspects: the lower aspect which created the universe in the six days of Creation, and a higher aspect, termed Elokim Chayim, ‘the living G-d’, which was revealed at Sinai, at the level of the Fiftieth Gate of Understanding. CHABAD ‫ב"ה‬ RESEARCH UNIT Summaries of points of the Rebbe’s Chassidic Discourses ‫בלי אחריות כלל וכלל‬ ‫ד"ה וידבר אלקים יום ב' חג השבועות תשל"ה בלתי מוגה‬ Published for Shavuot 6-7 Sivan 5786, 22-3 May 20261 WHAT HAPPENED AT SINAI? The preparation for this great and permanent revelation is the counting of the Omer, purifying our emotions, and our saying ‘We will do and we will hear!’ Then came the Giving of the Torah, revealing exalted G-dliness in everyday life. This infinite level was being revealed though the Ten Commandments and everything they imply: the Written Torah, the Oral Torah, even a new and clever idea which a seasoned student will discover in discussion with his teacher. But in fact the actual Ten Commandments were very simple commands – such as do not murder, do not commit adultery – and were mostly already included in the 1 Vayedaber Elokim 5735, printed in Dvarmalchut Shavuot (Naso) 5786. But even higher was the level of the Tetragrammaton which was revealed, and, even more, the term Anochi, ‘I’, both expressed in the next verse Anochi Hashem Elokeicha, ‘I am Hashem your G-d’.. It expresses the way this intense level of G- dliness was revealed in this lowly physical world through the Torah and all its varied dimensions, permeating every aspect of daily life. Rabbi Shneur Zalman explains3 that the word ‘saying’ in this first verse of the Ten Commandments means that when a Jew studies Torah, G-d is saying the words 3 Torah Or, Yitro 67b. The answer is that before the Giving of the Torah, the spiritual upper realms were completely separate from the physical lower realms, as if there were a barrier in between.
