The Separate Census On the verse,1 “However, you shall not count the tribe of Levi, and you shall not take a census of them among the children of Yisrael” (which is stated as a continuation of the census of the “children of Yisrael”), Rashi quotes the words “However you shall not count the tribe of Levi” and explains: “It is fitting for the King’s legion to be counted by itself. 2 He said, ‘Let these not be included among them, because they are Mine, as they did not err with the Golden Calf.’” From the simple reading of Rashi’s words, it seems that his intention is not to negate the interpretation that “you shall not count the tribe of Levi” means the tribe of Levi should not be counted at all . And he would therefore be explaining that the tribe of Levi was counted (as is explicitly stated later in theparshah3), but merely that they were counted “ by 4 themselves.” If that were the case, Rashi should have5 emphasized the novelty—that the tribe of Levi was counted by itself (since the verse had not yet mentioned that the tribe of Levi was counted at all)6—and only then added the reasons why they were counted alone. For this, he offers two reasons: a) because they are “the King’s legion,” and b) so that “these not be included” in the “decree… against all those counted from twenty years old and upward, that they would die in the wilderness.” We can say that Rashi did not need to negate the aforementioned interpretation (that the tribe of Levi was not counted at all).
