Translation revised & republished for Parshas Mishpotim 5780 ‫ וַיָב ֹא‬The Possuk‫ א‬at the end‫ ב‬of this week’s Parsha‫ ג‬states: ‫וַיָ ב ֹא‬ ‫“ מֹשֶׁ ה בְּ תוְך הֶׁ עָ נָן גו‬Moshe came within the cloud”.‫ ד‬Rashi explains‫ה‬ under the heading ‫ בְּ תוְך הֶׁ עָ נָן‬and says: This cloud was a kind of smoke, and quotes the Talmud‫ ו‬and says that Hashem, blessed ‫ א‬Possuk: Shmos (24:18) ‫וַיָּב ֹא מֹשֶׁ ה בְּ תֹוְך‬ When he is finished speaking, HaShem ‫הֶׁ עָּ נָּן וַיַעַ ל אֶׁ ל הָּ הָּ ר וַיְּהִ י מֹשֶׁ ה בָּ הָּ ר אַ ְּרבָּ עִ ים יֹום‬ gives Moshe the Luchos. Yet in Parshas Mishpotim the Torah talks about a ‘Consuming Fire’?‫מז‬ ‫ וְּ גַם צָ ִריְך לְּ הָ בִ ין‬We also need to clarify, for what reason does our Parsha‫ מח‬not explicitly state that it was smoke and it is only from naturally this fire on Mount Sinai should Torah’ every person now has the ability to had been a smokeless fire. 2 be He, made a path within it.‫ז‬ ‫ וְּהוּא‬The Talmud draws a parallel‫ ח‬and states that in our Possuk the Torah uses the word ‘B’soch’ and it also uses the same word ‘B’soch’ when the Possuk‫ ט‬says: “The B’nei Yisroel went into the sea on dry land”, just like on the dry land in the sea there was a ‘path’ because the Torah tells us that “the water was, for them,‫י‬ a wall”‫ יא‬so too over here‫ יב‬in the cloud there was also a path.‫יג‬ ‫ ז‬It: A path within the cloud which was like ‫“ חֹומָּ ה מִ ימִ ינָּם ּומִ שְּ מ ֹאלָּ ם‬Then the children smoke. ‫ יב‬Over here: Where the Torah states: ‫ ט‬Possuk: whilst describing the splitting “Moshe came within the cloud.” of the sea; in Shmos Beshalach (14:22) ‫ יג‬A path: Made for Moshe to enter into ‫וַיָּ בֹאּו בְּ נֵי יִשְּ ָּראֵ ל בְּ תֹוְך הַ יָּ ם בַ יַבָּ שָּ ה וְּהַ מַ יִם לָּ הֶׁ ם‬ the cloud which was like smoke. 3 ‫ וְּהִ נֵה‬This smoke‫( יד‬The cloud was like smoke‫ )טו‬emanates from fire,‫ טז‬but not from the fire itself, but from the substance that the ‫ יד‬Smoke: Like all smoke, like the cliché smoke comes from that which the fire is ‘There is no smoke without fire’.
