Why does רש"יstart by describing the Egyptians as being “with one heart”, and only then “like one man”, but he describes בני ישראלfirst as being “like one man”, and then “with one heart”? This is why רש"יdescribes them first as having לֵב אֶ חָ ד, one shared feeling of the heart, only then as being כְּ אִ יש אֶ חָ ד, joining together to fight like one man. The only thing that brought them together was their having one “heart”, their feeling of hatred for בני ישראל, and their common desire to chase them down. Then, because they were like one man, they were also united with one feeling of the heart, to prepare for ______ _____. He says they were: כְּ אִ יש אֶ חָ ד, – בְּ לֵב אֶ חָ דwith one _______, like one _____. Therefore, רש"יstarts by saying that they were כְּ אִ יש אֶ חָ ד, really like one man. ANSWER: The Egyptians were not really united as one man.
