QUESTION: Why did the king only _________ the knife for מר יהודהbut not for ?באטי בר טובי ANSWER: As a rule, a king is not allowed to do work in the presence of others, since it diminishes his honor in their eyes. However, the king also knew that מר יהודהwould not eat the אתרוגthat had been cut with a knife that was used for בישול עכו"ם, even if refusing to eat what the king served him might cost him his life. This is why he didn’t Kasher the knife for באטי, whom he knew would eat the אתרוגanyway, since refusing it would be disrespectful to the king and could cost him his life. So the king had to Kasher it for him, so he would be able to eat it and not be put to death.
