I know he learned that from you because I once saw him at a Shiur that you gave on Derech Mitzvosecha, Mitzvas Eved Ivri, and yet he is still lying because you trained him so well to go against us!” At the end of the interrogations, each of the Chassidim were sentenced: R’ Nissen was given ten years of exile in the harsh climes of Siberia, and the Bochurim were given a weaker sentence of three years exile in a distant place, far from Moscow. B"H ‫ספורי‬ R' NISSEN AND THE ‫חסידים‬ TEMIMIM IN SPALERKA As told over by R’ Asher Sossonko A”H: When the Russian government closed Tomchei Temimim in Nevel, the Yeshiva moved to the city of Leningrad, under the auspices of R’ Nissen Nemenov A”H. About a year later, when the Russian government found out about the new Yeshiva they arrested R’ Nissen and twelve Bochurim, all between the ages of eighteen and twenty; R’ Asher Sossonko was one of the Bochurim. R’ Nissen answered emphatically, “No.” So the interrogator, trying to be clever, brought in R’ Asher and asked him if he knew R’ Nissen, if he had ever learned with him and if he had ever heard a Shiur from him. I don't care that you learn with them, which is “allowed,” but he just lied straight to me, and I couldn't even tell on his face that he was lying! Once R’ Asher had left, the interrogator calmed down a bit before turning to R’ Nissen and said, “You know why you deserve to be shot (R”L)? The conviction in R’ Asher’s voice angered the interrogator so much, that he threw an inkwell at R’ Asher and ordered him out of the room! This group of “criminals” were transferred to the famed Spalerka prison, where the Frierdiker Rebbe had been imprisoned in 1927. The KGB office required the Bochurim to check in regularly to prove they hadn’t run away.
