The climax of Yom Kippur is at the end of Neilah, when we declare the first line of the Shema once, which expresses the oneness of G-d, then three times Baruch Shem, blessed be the Glory of G-d, the second line of the Shema, and then seven times we declare ‘Hashem is Elokim’, the L-rd is G-d. Then with a sincere heart we are able to make this statement seven times, at the close of Yom Kippur, and then hear the long single blast of the Shofar, like the Shofar of Redemption, and cry out together: Next Year in Jerusalem! The word Hashem, or ‘the L-rd’, is used to translate the ineffable Divine Name with four letters which should never be pronounced outside the Temple, the 1 Maamar Shuvah Yisrael 5727 (1966). It seems that this passage presents a view of Return, Repentance, which is useful for Jews through the ages to help them prepare for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Indeed, when you look at the way this Name is written in the Torah – Y-H-V-H- one sees that it is a kind of combination of HYH (was), HVH (is), and YHYH (will be). The Rebbe says, strikingly: just as you are the ‘owner’ of your present, in that you are free to decide what to do, so too you can be ‘owner’ of your past. The foolish or evil act can be transformed through the power of Repentance, with the heightened power of the change of consciousness that Hashem is Elokim. The process of Teshuvah, Repentance, is an attempt to change one’s consciousness, which affects one’s spiritual balance in relation to existence and G-d. The interesting point about almost any Hebrew passage from the Bible is that its meaning is not so simple as the usual translation would have us think.
