Shortly before the Exodus Hashem told Moses of which it is said ‘this month (the Talmud4 adds: when the moon looks like this – a new moon – sanctify it) shall be for you the head of the months, it is the first for you of the months of the year.’5 Hence every Rosh Chodesh draws from Rosh Chodesh Nisan, and Nisan is the first of the months. The Midrash6 on this verse tells us that when Hashem chose His world, He fixed in it heads of months and of years, and when He chose Jacob and his sons (the ancestors of the Jewish people) He fixed the Rosh Chodesh of Redemption, meaning Rosh Chodesh Nisan, the month when the Jewish people were redeemed from Egypt. This means that the Divine choice of Jacob and his descendants, the Jewish people, led to their redemption from Egypt, beginning with the miracles of the first day of Pesach when, as the Haggadah says: ‘the King of Kings, the Holy One was revealed to them in His Glory and Essence and redeemed them. Hashem ‘changed the seas to dry land’, in the past tense, was during the Exodus, the Splitting of the Sea; but ‘they will go through the river by foot’ in the future refers to events prophesied regarding the future Redemption, when, as Isaiah states9, Hashem ‘will smite the river’ and people will be able to walk over it, as on dry land. When these two aspects of Ein Sof combined, the ultimate cosmic masculine and feminine, there was a release of Divine Power which carried through to the Splitting of the Sea, the Giving of the Torah, the conquest of the Land of Israel, and then the ultimate Redemption. This was a preparation for the giving of the Torah at Sinai, when again the ‘hidden’ Divine realms became revealed; and also for the splitting of the river in the future redemption when even higher aspects of the Divine will be disclosed.
