B"H ‫ספורי‬ FROM GAN EDEN ‫חסידים‬ INTO BLOTEH As told by R’ Yehoshua Korf (R’ Shea) A”H: In 1927, when the Frierdiker Rebbe was brought to Leningrad, Russia for interrogations before eventually being arrested, there were a few Bochurim who were given permission to stay with the Rebbe. Every Rebbe besides the Alter Rebbe and our Rebbe used this system.) Once, R’ Shea was called into the Frierdiker Rebbe's office to repeat a Maamar that spoke about Gan Eden and in the middle of the Chazara (repetition), the phone rang. He went to the Frierdiker Rebbe and said that there were some really devoted Chassidim who had traveled from very far and missed the Maamar, and they desperately wanted to know if the Rebbe would repeat it. The Rebbe’s secretary told the Frierdiker Rebbe that it was an important call, and in general a phone call in those days was significant and usually meant something important. “You slept through the whole Maamar!” The Frierdiker Rebbe was upset that R’ Itche was mocked, so the Rebbe put his hat back on again and repeated the Maamar for R’ Itche! At the Farbrengen, R’ Itche drank a lot of L'Chaim, as many Chassidim do on Purim, and quickly fell asleep, missing the Maamar that the Frierdiker Rebbe said. R’ Eliyahu Chaim Althauz A”H was standing behind the Frierdiker Rebbe when this happened and got very upset with R’ Itche for what he saw as Chutzpah. After finishing the phone conversation, the Frierdiker Rebbe turned back to R’ Shea and said, “‫( ”און קעריק אין גן עדן‬back in Gan Eden). The reason for this system was so the Rebbe could correct any mistake and make sure the written and oral record of the Maamar would be accurate. These Bochurim would help the Frierdiker Rebbe and Chazar the Maamorim the Rebbe would say; R’ Shea Korf was one of these Chozrim.
