CHABAD ב"ה RESEARCH UNIT he Rebbe's Discourses T Summaries of points of the Rebbe’s Chassidic Discourses בלי אחריות כלל וכלל ד"ה ויאמר לו יהונתן מחר חודש ש"פ במדבר ער"ח סיון תשל"ה בלתי מוגה Republished for Shabbat Sedra Bamidbar 28 Iyyar 5786, 15 January 20261 MISSING AND FOUND T HE HAFTORAH READ IN THE SYNAGOGUE WHEN SHABBAT IS THE EVE OF ROSH CHODESH IS a passage from the Book of Samuel in which Jonathan says to David: ‘Tomorrow will be Rosh Chodesh; you will be missing [from the table] and so [my father King Soul] will notice/remember you’2. The daily prayer ‘My G-d, the soul You have given me is pure, You created it, formed it and blew it into me..’ hints at the descent of the Divine Soul from that exalted level of ‘purity’ and even higher, then coming down through the worlds of Creation, Formation and finally Action, into this lowly world. And there we learn ‘make His will like your will, so that He will make your will like His will…’6 This means that after the struggle of self-control, itkafya, in the ‘Desert of Sinai’ where G-d might seem absent, we then reach a higher level, in which our own will simply mirrors the Divine Will, a state termed ‘it-hafcha’, transformation, the ultimate bonding with G-d as in the Tent of Meeting. The background is that although David is part of King Saul’s household, since he married his daughter Michal, and is a leading figure in society (beginning with his conquest of Goliath), there is great anger and jealousy towards him from Saul. One is this able to relate to the Divine with one’s inner qualities of Wisdom and Understanding, but this also calls forth a flow of transcendent connection with the Divine, as expressed in the ‘Tent’, which surrounds the person from above. This too is the meaning of the Torah reading on the first day of Shavuot, which starts with ‘In the third month, on this day [Rosh Chodesh] they came to the Desert of Sinai..’7 The third month is Sivan, coming after Nisan and Iyyar. In personal terms, the sense of absence of the Divine expressed in the ‘Desert of Sinai’ leads to the person needing to exercise self-control, itkafya, ‘quelling’ the negative tendencies of the Animal Soul.
