If one turns Bar Mitzvah on the first night of Chanukah, and his family minhag is to light the Chanukah candles at shkia, when should he light: Should he light at shkia with the rest of his family, or should he wait until nacht when he is Bar Mitzvah and fully obligated in mitzvos and not just obligated to perform them due to chinuch? The reason being, that the mitzvah of chinuch is only by something which a gadol is obligated in according to strict halachah, however, by the mitzvah of lighting menorah even a gadol who is part of the family and is not the ba’al habayis is only obligated due to hiddur mitzvah, therefore, there is no chiyuv of chinuch. 49) argue on R’ Akiva Eiger and maintain that even if the family members fulfill their chiyuv with the lighting of the ba’al habayis (and they don’t have any kavonah not to), and the only reason they are lighting is because of hiddur mitzvah, they can still make a berachah, as they maintain that one may make a berachah on hiddur mitzvah. Based on this, if the Bar Mitzvah boy would light at shkia with his family, it wouldn’t help for his ikar chiyuv [main obligation] which would come at nacht, as the original lighting doesn’t have any halachic basis to it, and it’s difficult to say that he can rely on such a lighting when becoming a gadol. Ruling of R’ Aharon Leib Shteinman zt”l According to R’ Akiva Eiger that the family members have intention not to fulfill their mitzvah with the lighting of the ba’al habayis, and they intend to be yoitza with their own lighting, when a kotan lights it is not only because of hiddur, but it is also because of the mitzvah of chinuch (see 677:2, that a kotan who is of the age of chinuch must light), therefore, they can rely on this lighting when they become a gadol at nacht.
