The Sages of the school of Rabbi Sheila said: “‫ מִ ּפְ נֵי ׁשֶ הַ ּנָׁשִים רַ חֲ מָ נִּיֹות הֵן‬- Because women are (more) compassionate”, and he (the king) hoped that what she would tell them would not be overly harsh.[5] So, if women are indeed more merciful, why do we pray that HaShem should have mercy on us like a father, instead of a mother? To help answer the above, we first preface the importance of compassion by quoting the Mesilas Yesharim where it states, “‫ שֶֹׁלּא הָ י ָה עֹומֵד זוּלָתֹו כְּ לָל‬,‫ מִדַּ ת הָרַ חֲ מִים הִיא קִיּוּמֹו שֶׁל עֹולָם‬- The trait of compassion is the mainstay of the world. The word ‫ רַ חֲ מִים‬stems from ‫רֶ חֶם‬, which denotes the most intense and self-sacrificing investment of energy by one being for the formation and emergence of another being; the commitment of all of one’s blood and energy for the sake of another being’s formation and completion. As the Midrash says, “‫ שָׁלשׁ מִדוֹת טוֹבוֹת נָתַ ן הַ קָדוֹשׁ בּ"ה לְ יִשְׂרָ אֵל רַ חֲ מָ נִים בַ י ְישָׁ נִים וְגוֹמְ לֵי חֲ סָדִ ים‬- There are three good character traits that the Holy One, blessed be He, gave to the Jewish people; merciful, bashful, and benevolent.”[10] Fathers vs. Shmuel says ‫ דַ רְ כּוֹ שֶׁל ָאב לְרַ חֵם‬it is the way of a father to have compassion ‫ כְּרַ חֵם ָאב עַל בָּ נִים‬as it says, “Like a father has mercy for his children” [11] ‫ וְדַ רְ כָּה שֶׁל אֵם לְ נַחֵם‬and the way of a mother to comfort ‫ כְּ אִישׁ אֲ שֶׁר אִמֹּו תְּ נַחֲ מֶנּוּ‬as it says, “Like a person whom his mother comforts ‫ כֵּן ָאנֹכִי אֲ נַחֶ מְ כֶם‬So I will comfort you. In Eicha it is written: “‫ י ְדֵ י נָשִׁים רַ חֲ מָ נִיֹּות בִּ שְּׁלוּ יַלְדֵ יהֶן‬- With their own hands, tenderhearted women have cooked their children…”[15] The Shelah HaKadosh,[16] shares an insightful and moralistic criticism of overly compassionate, indulgent mothers who, for example, allow their children to sleep rather than get up in the morning for tefillah or Torah study. The Talmud also says that the level of connection and attachment that is compared to a “father” is considered the highest level of attachment.[20] Summary With all the above, we now get a better appreciation of
