E-mail DoItForDovid@gmail.com Our Parsha begins by saying that when Pharaoh sent the Jews from Egypt, Hashem did not let them travel by way of the land of the Philistines, (not to be confused with the term Palestinian, which describes people who came to the land of Israel about 3,000 years later) because it was “close.” What’s wrong if they took the expressway? “Do you have any idea what I had to do to get all those people on one boat?!” This week is known as Shabbos Shira, because it is the Parsha that contains the Shira al Hayam, also known as Az Yashir, which the Jews sang at the Reed Sea after the Egyptians were all drowned and they saw their tormentors could finally no longer get to them. People who’ve suffered through illness but pushed to help others; people who lost loved ones to illness or even terrorism, who have managed to put their energies into foundations and organizations that do so much good, they are the people who learned the lesson Hashem was teaching when we left Egypt. In the case of a Metzora, one who developed tzara’as (spiritual leprosy), birds are used for the sacrifice to chastise people who use their mouths inappropriately by signaling that just as birds twitter incessantly, people who speak Lashon Hara or gossip need to learn to stop it. In this tefilla, we say, “Were our mouths as full as the sea…” Perhaps just as the sea is full of water and no other liquid, we should strive to ensure our mouths are filled only with Torah, kind words, and praise of Hashem. The Torah continues, “For Hashem said, “Lest the nation regret, when they encounter war, and return to Egypt.”” Therefore, He took them through a wilderness where no one lived. What Az Yashir does is highlight the fact that non-Jews who think they are the stars of the show, rather than supporting cast, are mistaken, and Hashem will not allow it.
