In this week’s parsha, we learn about the double portion of mann that descended on Friday in honor of the coming Shabbos: ויהי ביום הששי לקטו לחם משנה- “It came to pass on Friday, that the people gathered a double portion of bread” (Shemos 16:22). Regarding the mann which our forefathers gathered in the desert, the pasuk states, “He who gathered much got no more than he needed, while he who gathered little got no less.” In other words, no matter how much they gathered, each returned home to find that his mann precisely suited his family’s needs. Mendelssohn sought revenge by writing to the Vilna Gaon that he now understands that Kriyas Yam Suf was completely natural and did not involve any miracles, for Chazal teach (Shemos Rabbah 8:3) that Moshe’s staff was made from סנפרונין, in which case striking the Yam Suf with it caused the water to part with no Divine intervention.
