Every resident among the ָּכּ ל ָה ֶאזְׁ ָרח ְׁבּ יִׁ ְׁש ָר ֵּאל יֵּ ְׁשבו Israelites shall live in sukkos, in order ּלְׁ ַּמעַּ ן יֵּדְׁ עו: בַּ ּ ֻּסכּ ֹּת that your [later] generations should דֹּר ֵֹּּתיכֶ ם כִּׁ י בַּ ֻּסכּ וֹּ ת know that I had the children of Israel הוֹּ ַּש ְׁב ִּׁתי ֶאת ְׁבּ נֵּ י יִׁ ְׁש ָר ֵּאל live in sukkos when I took them out of בְׁ ּ הוֹּ צִׁ יאִׁ י אוֹּ ָתם ֵּמאֶ ֶרץ the land of Egypt. בסוכות תשבו שבעת ימים כל האזרח בישראל ישבו בסוכות (והטעם על זה) למען ידעו דורותיכם כי בסוכות הושבתי את בנ"י )’ ומלשון הכתוב (למען ידעו גו.1’בהוציאי אותם מארץ מצרים גו אלא) חלק, שידיעה זו היא (לא רק ענין בכוונת המצוה2למדים .)3בקיום המצוה (כדמוכח גם מלשון כ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן בשולחנו עד שהיא4 מה נוגע כ"כ ידיעה זו,וידועים דיוקי רבותינו נשיאינו בזה .חלק מהמצוה In addition to mentioning the mitzvah of dwelling in a sukkah, these pesukim also explain the reason for this mitzvah. The Rebbe continues to mention additional questions asked by the previous Rebbeim: הרי סוכה הוא בחי’ מקיף וענין ההתיישבות,וגם מהו בסוכות תשבו ,5(דתשבו כולל גם הפירוש דהתיישבות) שייך בבחי’ פנימי דוקא ומזה שאומר בסוכות תשבו מוכח שגם לאחרי הישיבה נשאר הוא . וענין ההתיישבות צ"ל בבחי’ המקיף,6בחי’ מקיף The sukkah represents the level of makkif – a revelation of G-dliness which is not limited to the capacity of the recipient. הרי הציווי,גם צריך להבין מ"ש כל האזרח בישראל ישבו בסוכות בסוכות תשבו הוא לכל ישראל ומה מוסיף דכל האזרח בישראל ובהציווי בסוכות תשבו אומר שבעת ימים משא"כ7ישבו בסוכות .6בהציווי כל האזרח גו’ אומר ישבו בסוכות סתם Additionally, these pesukim seem repetitive: Question Three (part one): If the possuk already told us that “For a seven-day period you shall live in sukkos,” why does it go on to repeat “Every resident among the Israelites shall live in sukkos”? דכל8והנה מפסוק זה (כל האזרח בישראל ישבו בסוכות) למדים הרי ענין האחדות דכל, וצ"ל.ישראל ראוים לישב בסוכה אחת ועד,) הוא גם במשך כל השנה9ישראל (ענין אתם נצבים היום כולכם שמצות אהבת ישראל [שהטעם לזה הוא לפי שכולם מת

ב"ה About Simply Chassidus Simply Chassidus releases one ma’amar of the Rebbe each month with English translation and commentary. Each ma’amar is divided into three sections, each of which can be learned in approximately one hour. By learning one section per week, usually on Shabbos morning, participants can finish one ma’amar per month, with time to review the ma’amar on Shabbos Mevarchim. Simply Chassidus is translated by Simcha Kanter and is a project of Congregation Bnei Ruven in Chicago under the direction of Rabbi Boruch Hertz. Reviewed with Rabbi Fischel Oster in the zechus of refuah shleima for ארי' יהודה בן שרה רבקה.
