An Eternal Commemoration for a Temporary Event From Rosh Chodesh Nissan until the twelfth of the month, “the custom is to read the portion of theNasi {prince} who brought his offering on that day.”1 For this reason, we also omit Tachanun on these days,2 because “on the first3 of Nissan (the day the Mishkan was erected in the desert4) the Nesi’im began to bring their offerings for the dedication of the Altar, one Nasi per day5 until the thirteenth of Nissan, and for each Nasi, the day he brought his offering was his personal Yom Tov.” (And since, coupled with the subsequent days of Pesach, “the majority of the month passes in holiness”6 — we omit Tachanun for the entire month of Nissan 2). The Yehi Ratzon : An Active, Eternal Illumination We also find a novelty in the way we observe this commemoration: After reading the Nasi’s portion, it is customary to recite aYehi Ratzon prayer.12 The text reads: “May it be Your will, L -rd my G -d and G-d of my fathers, that if I, Your servant, am from the tribe of (so-and-so), whose portion of the Nasi I have read today in Your Torah, then may all the holy sparks and all the holy lights that are included in the holiness of this tribe shine upon me, to understand and gain wisdom in Your Torah and in awe of You, to do Your will all the days of my life, I, my children, and my children’s children, from now and forever, Amen.” This means that every single Jew (and not just select individuals) prays that “all the holy sparks… included in the holiness of this tribe shine upon me.” Furthermore, we ask that this illumination not remain hidden or concealed, but rather that it impacts our divine service in actuality: “to understand and gain wisdom in Your Torah and in awe of You, to do Your will {meaning, not only in theory, but in actuality, to do it}”; (and furthermore) “all the days of my life, I”; (and furthermore—) “my children, and my children’s children”; (and in a manner of) “from now and forever”!
