For thirty years I have been looking for a Shabbos jacket that buttons itself right over left, like a Jew should have for Shabbos, and now I finally found one!” ‫לע"נ הרה"ת ר' יוסף יצחק ב"ר אשר ז"ל‬ B"H ‫ספורי‬ THE WOMEN'S ‫חסידים‬ RAINCOAT As told by R’ Shlomo Galperin: During the difficult years after World War II, an organization called Ezras Achim was established to help Yidden in Russia. Typically, the American goods were not actually used by the Yidden, aside for some practical items like coats, and instead they would sell them on the black market, earning a large profit. One Shabbos, R’ Galperin was walking to a secret Shul in the city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, when he bumped into R’ Asher Sossonko A”H, so the two decided to walk to Shul together. These packages were a great source of income for the Yidden in Russia, especially for those who kept Shabbos and kosher, and were trying to live a Chassidishe life. Ezras Achim would send a variety of basics to their brothers and sisters stuck in the USSR, such as pens, blankets, tablecloths, coats, etc., from America. A typical working professional’s income in those times, in the former USSR, was 65 rubles a month, and some of the American goods sold for 70 rubles each! As they entered the Shul, a Yid stopped them and told R’ Asher, “Excuse me, but that raincoat is a women’s raincoat.” R’ Asher responded, “Are you crazy?! These items were inexpensive in America but extremely valuable in Russia.
