In his version of this verse, he adds the words, “when they offered a foreign fire.” Our Sages offer numerous possible suggestions for why these men died, though there is a verse elsewhere that says they offered an unbidden offering and lit a non-commanded fire upon it. When we speak about not besmirching Hashem’s name, about treating others fairly and paying them on time, and not cursing a deaf person, even when we are told to fear Hashem, the posuk ends with, “Ani Hashem,” the phrase connected to serving from love. Ramban said, “Man’s understanding compared to G-d’s is less than the size of an ant compared to the magnitude of the sun.” Therefore, we cannot follow our hearts and “do what feels right,” because if G-d didn’t command it to us, we know it is wrong. Rashi also quotes the Medrash that if a doctor warns a patient “do not do such-and-such” it is not nearly as effective as warning him “do not do such-and-such or you shall die like Ploni.” Did Aharon really need this warning? The Torah says in Parshas Kedoshim, “Do not take revenge, and love your friend as yourself.” Rabbi Akiva said, “This is a great rule in Torah.” The Ramban questions how we can be commanded to feel a certain way about someone. Parshas Achrei Mos is named for its opening verse, which says that immediately after Aharon’s sons died, Moshe was commanded to speak to him and tell him about only entering the Holy of Holies under specific circumstances. The first one is, “Ani Hashem Elokaichem - I am Hashem, your G-d.” The second one is “Ani Hashem – I am Hashem.” As various mitzvos are given, many times they are strengthened with one of these phrases. This does not mean we must let ourselves be abused, but when we have the upper hand and may begin to hurt others, we must remember Hashem and His love, and treat them as we would wish to be treated. What one approach achieves, the other may not, and while loving Hashem is considered a higher level of connection, one who becomes too familiar may come to be lax in the respect Hashem deserves. The verse teaches that they “approached
