Parsha Halacha – Parshat Vayishlach Eliphaz, Son of Eisav, Friend of Job An Enigmatic Character Sponsored by Rabbi Binyomin and Carrie Lisbon and family in honor of the upcoming Yomtov of Yud-Tes Kislev, Rosh HaShanah of Chassidus Co-sponsored by Solly and Debbie Btesh in honor the birthday of Meir ben Baruch Parsha Halacha is underwritten by a grant from Dr. ● Gold Is My god Tosfot says that6 Eliphaz is a pagan name which means “Gold (‫ )פז‬is my god (‫)אֵ לִ י‬.” This can allude to Eilphaz’ or Eisav’s excessive desire for wealth.7 (It is possible that the name was given by Eisav who was a pagan while Eliphaz himself was righteous, see below.) ● Gold Is for Me According to the Roke’ach,8 Timna paid Eliphaz a lot of gold so that he should take her as a concubine. (See below for more about Timna.) His name reflects this as it means “Gold (‫ )פז‬is for me (‫)אֵ לַי‬.” It has been suggested9 that because Eliphaz married Timna, a women who wasn’t so suitable,10 for the sake of money, that their son Amalek ended up being an evil man. Classic Teachings Here are some of the classic teachings that Eliphaz said as recorded in the book of Job: ● ‫“ זְ כׇ ר נָא מִ י הּוא נָקִ י אָ בָ ד‬Think now, what innocent man was ever destroyed?”41 ● ‫“ הֵ ן בַ עֲבָ דָ יו ל ֹא יַאֲמִ ין ּובְ מַ לְ אָ כָיו יָשִ ים תׇ הֳ לָה‬If He cannot trust His own servants ● and casts reproach on His angels”42 ● ‫“ ִכִּֽ י אָ דָ ם לְ עָ מָ ל יּולָד‬For man is born to toil.”43 ● ‫“ ְ ִּֽויָדַ עְ תָ ִכִּֽ י שָ לֹום אׇ הֳ לֶָך ּוִּֽ פָ קַ ְדתָ נָ וְָך וְ ל ֹא תֶ חֱ טָ א‬You will know that all is well in your tent; When you visit your dwelling place you will not sin.”44 ● ‫“ וְתִ בְ חַ֗ ַ ר לְ שֹון עֲרּומִ ים‬So that you choose the language of the wise”45 ● ‫“ הֲ ִראישֹון אָ דָ ם תִ ּוָ לֵד‬Were you created before (the first) man?”46 ● ‫“ ָמַ ה יִ קָ חֲ ָך לִ בֶ ך‬How your heart has carried you away!”47 ● ‫“ הֵ ן בִ קְ דֹשָ ו ל ֹא יַאֲמִ ין‬Behold, He does not trust His holy ones.”48 ● ‫“ ּהָ אֹמְ ִרים לָאֵ ל סּור מִ מֶ ּנו‬Those who say to G-d, ‘stay awa
