Oct 13, 2023 ) The Moon to Rule the Stars Statement: On the fourth day of creation, the pasuk states, “וַ יַּעַשׂ אֱֹלקִים אֶת־שְׁ נֵי הַ מְּא ֹר ֹת וְ אֶת־הַ מָּאֹור הַ קָּט ֹן לְ מֶ מְ שֶׁ לֶת הַ לַּ יְלָה וְ אֵת הַכֹּוכָ בִים... הַ גְּדֹלִים- And G-d made the two great luminaries: ...the lesser luminary (the moon) to rule the night, and the stars.”[1] * Question: Based on this, it seems the moon’s job is to rule both the night and the stars. The Talmud[3] says: רַ ּבִי חֲ נִינָא אֹומֵר Rabbi Chanina says, מַ ּזָל מַ חְ ּכִים "The influence of one's mazal makes one wise מַ ּזָל מַ עֲ ׁשִיר mazal makes one wealthy, וְ י ֵׁש מַ ּזָל לְ יִׂשְרָ אֵל and there is a mazal for the Jewish people רַ ּבִי יֹוחָ נָן ָאמַר (However) Rabbi Yochanan said אֵין מַ ּזָל לְ יִׂשְרָ אֵל There is no mazal for the Jewish people (that influences them.) One example that shows how Jews can rise above the influence of their mazal is: וַיֹּוצֵא א ֹתֹו הַחוּצָה He (HaShem) took him (Avram) outside וַיּ ֹאמֶר הַ בֶּט־נָא הַ שָּׁ מַ יְמָה and said, “Gaze toward heaven וּסְפ ֹר הַכֹּוכָ בִים and count the stars אִם־תּוּכַל לִ סְפּ ֹר א ֹתָ ם if you are able to count them,” וַיּ ֹאמֶר לֹו And He said to him, :כּ ֹה יִהְ י ֶה ז ְַרעֶָך “So shall your offspring be.”[4] Although it might have been written in the stars that Avram and Sarai could not have children, HaShem told him to disregard this. Perhaps we could understand the above Talmudic statement of “ אֵין מַ ּזָל לְ יִׂשְרָ אֵל- There is no mazal for the Jewish people” to really refer to HaShem, who, in the language of Kabbalist, is called, ַאי ִןand אֵין סוֹף- Without End.[16] Meaning that HaShem is our mazal and influence, especially when we’re connected. Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk said, “We say of HaShem, that thanks to teshuvah, ‘ כִּרְ ח ֹק מִ ז ְָרח מִ מַּ עֲרָ ב הִרְ חִיק מִ מֶּנּוּ אֶת־פְּ שָׁ עֵינוּas far as east from west, has He distanced our transgressions from us.’[19] So the Kotzker Rebbe asked his students, “Perhaps one of you can tell me how far east is from west?” The students grappled with this problem. Just as the light of the moon will be renewed to become like the light of the sun, so will Israel return to cleave to Hashem, as we say in the prayers of Kiddush Levana, “וְ לַ לְּ בָ נָה ָ
