COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS The Rainbow (Part 4) by Rabbi Reuven Lauffer “Rainbows remind us that even after the darkest clouds and the fiercest winds there is still beauty.” Katrina Mayer PhD The blessing recited over seeing a rainbow is: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Who remembers the covenant, is faithful to His covenant, and www.ohr.edu 4 keeps His promise. Rabbeinu Bachya (Bereshit 9:13) points out, however, that the “legs” of the rainbow are on the ground and the arch of the rainbow points upwards, towards the Heavens, because “it is customary in times of war to hold the bow facing one’s body (i.e., in shooting position), and in peace, to turn the bow around and hold the back of the bow.” Thus, despite being a symbol of Hashem’s displeasure, the rainbow actually becomes a sign of peace. Which means that, within its negative symbolism, the rainbow actually carries a most uplifting message: Though we behave in a way that should arouse Divine wrath, Hashem in His infinite kindness tempers His reaction, letting us know that His love for us transcends everything.
