See Colours of the Sefirot | Mayim Achronim ; Spinning Strictness with Mercy - Chabad.org Statement: ‫ הַָארְ ּבַע ּכֹוסֹות הֵם ּכְ נֶגֶד הַָארְ ּבָ עָה ּבָ נִים‬- The four cups (of wine) correspond to the four sons.” 2 Question: Besides both being four, what deeper connection does each of these four cups have to the four sons? The second cup represents the word, “‫ וְ הִ צַּ לְתִּ י‬- And I will save you.” The first act of saving the wicked son requires the parent to “‫ הַ קְ הֵה אֶת ִׁשָּניו‬- blunt their teeth” and remove the sharpness of their words from affecting others, as it says, “‫ וְ הִ צַּ לְתִּ י צ ֹאנִי מִ פִּיהֶם‬- and I shall rescue My flocks from their mouth” 16 The ‫ רָ שָׁע‬is encouraged to learn from the ‫ חָ כָם‬and utilize his head instead of his mouth - as it says, “‫אִם־קֵ הָה‬ ‫ הַ בַּרְ זֶל…וְ י ִתְ רֹון הַ כְ שֵׁיר ׇחכְ מָה‬- If the iron be blunt…yet wisdom has a greater advantage.” 17 ● Urchatz - ‫וּרְ חַץ‬ The first action in this spiritual journey is to become purified through ‫ וּרְ חַץ‬- washing.18 This washing is not accompanied with a blessing since this purification is not completed until later with ‫רָ חְ צָה‬. Alternatively, no blessing is said at this point because this represents “‫ אִתְ עֲרּותָ א ּדִ לְתַ ּתָ א‬- an awakening from below.” The phrase “‫ אֲֶׁשר קִיְּד ׁשָנּו בְ מִ צְֹותָ יו‬- who has sanctified us with His commandments” implies that the issuing of the command to perform the Mitzvah, by which we become holy, comes first from Above. Similar to the saying ‫ וּמְ קַדְּ שִׁין אוֹתוֹ‬,‫ָאדָ ם מְ קַדֵּ שׁ אֶת עַ צְמֹו לְּ מַ טָּה‬ ‫ הַרְ בֵּה לְּ מַ עְ לָה‬- a person sanctifies themselves below, and they are sanctified greatly above.” 19 ● Karpas - ‫כַּרְ פַּס‬ By tasting the saltwater, the ‫ רָ שָׁע‬confronts the bitterness of his
