The Northern Kingdom After the passing of King Solomon, ten of the tribes refused to accept the rule of his son Rechavam and instead broke away to form their own kingdom under the reign of Yeravam ben Nevat.2 (The two tribes who remained under Rechavam were Yehudah and Binyamin 3.) Although Yeravam was a Torah scholar and started out with good intentions, 4 he eventually turned to idol worship and led his subjects after him. In his words, 8 “G-d will strike Israel until it sways like a reed in water and uproot Israel from this good land that was given to their ancestors, and will scatter them beyond the Euphrates because they have provoked G-d by the asheira (idolatrous) trees that they have made for themselves.” The First (or Second) Wave9 This prophecy began to be fulfilled with the exile of the tribes of Reuven, Gad, and half of the tribe of Menashe in the year 574 BCE (3187 from creation). As the verse says,10 “So the G-d of Israel roused the spirit of King Pul of Assyria11—the spirit of King Tillegath-Pileser of Assyria— and he carried them away, namely, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, and brought them to Chalach, Chavor, Chara, and the river Gozan, to this day.” The verse doesn’t explicitly say the exact date of this exile. 13 The Second (or First) Wave The tribes of Zevulun and Naftali were exiled in the year 566 BCE (or 3195 from creation) as the verse says,14 “In the days of King Pekach of Israel, King Tiglat-Pileser of Assyria came and captured Yano’ach, Avel-beit-Ma’acha, Yano’ach, Kedesh, Chatzor—Gilead, Galilee, the entire region of Naftali; and he transported the inhabitants to Assyria.” According to Isaiah (9:23) this 6 See II Kings chapter 9 and on.
