Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein 2023 / 5784 MESHECH CHOCHMAH Parshas Vayechi Ephraim and Menashe ‫וַ יִ ּשְ ׁלַח יִשְ ָׂראֵ ל אֶ ת יְמִ ינוֹ וַ יָּשֶ ׁת עַ ל רֹאׁש אֶ פְ ַריִם וְ הּוא הַ צָ ּעִ יר וְ אֶ ת שְ ׂמֹ אלוֹ עַ ל רֹאׁש‬ ‫מְ נַשֶ ּׁה‬ Yisrael extended his right hand and placed it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and his left hand on Menashe’s head. He begins by referring to an explanation of R’ Yehonasan Eybeshutz2 regarding a pasuk in Tehillim3 that we say regularly, which reads: ‫יִפֹ ּל מִ צִ ְּדָּך אֶ לֶף ּורְ בָ בָ ה מִ ימִ ינֶָך‬ A thousand shall fall at your side and a myriad at your right From the fact that the second phrase in the pasuk refers explicitly to “your right,” we thereby infer that when the first phrase mentions “your side,” it is referring to the left side. Torah and Prayer The Meshech Chochmah4 notes that the above idea regarding the distinction between right and left can be perceived clearly in the pasuk in sefer Yeshaya,5 which states: ‫ַאף י ִָדי יָסְ ָדה אֶ ֶרץ וִ ימִ ינִי טִ פְ ּחָ ה שָ ׁמָ יִם‬ My hand has established the earth, and My right hand had measured out the heavens Here, too, we see that creation of the earth, i.e. With this in mind, we can understand a somewhat cryptic comment of Chazal regarding the Torah’s description of the splitting of the Red Sea: ‫וְ הַ מַ ּיִם לָהֶ ם חוֹמָ ה מִ ימִ ינָם ּומִ שְ ּׂמֹ אלָם‬ And the water was a wall for them, on their right and on their left10 Commenting on this pasuk, the Sifrei11 explains: Z “On their right” – this refers to Torah Z “And on their left” – this refers to tefillah Based on our discussion, we understand that Chazal’s allocation of Torah and tefillah as explaining the walls on the right and the left reflect the two different planes of Divine connection which they enable and develop. Moshe’s Berachah to Yosef With this in mind, we can appreciate on a deeper level an aspect of the berachah that was bestowed to Yosef many years later by Moshe Rabbeinu, which says:14 ‫וְ קַ ְרנֵי ְראֵ ם קַ ְרנָיו בָ ּהֶ ם עַ מִ ּים יְ נַגַ ּח יַחְ ָדּו ַאפְ סֵ י ָארֶ ץ וְ הֵ ם ִרבְ בוֹת אֶ פְ ַריִם וְ הֵ ם ַאלְ פֵ י מְ נַשֶ ּׁה‬ His horns are like those of t
