Although Shem is listed first when the sons of No’ach are enumerated,1 according to several commentaries, he was the youngest of the three sons.2 He is listed first because of his outstanding qualities,3 specifically: ● He was the most righteous4 and wise.5 ● He was born circumcised (see below) ● And was considered to be the Kohen Gadol6 in whose portion of land (Jerusalem) the Beit HaMikdash would be built.
