Although Shem is listed first when the sons of No’ach are enumerated,1 according to several commentaries, he was the youngest of the three sons.2 He is listed first because of his outstanding qualities,3 specifically: ● He was the most righteous4 and wise.5 ● He was born circumcised (see below) ● And was considered to be the Kohen Gadol6 in whose portion of land (Jerusalem) the Beit HaMikdash would be built. He received his Torah knowledge from his great- grandfather Chanoch who had studied under Seth who had received it from Adam HaRishon.17 In addition, he served his great-grandfather Methuselah (and learned from him) for 98 years.18 One of Four Carpenters In a prophecy about the Messianic times, Zechariah19 says, “Then G-d showed me four carpenters… these carpenters have come to throw them (the nations of the world) into 10 Rabbi Eliezer Ashkenazi, son of Eliyahu, the Doctor in Ma’asei Hashem, Ma’asei Bereishit, chapter 30, and Yalkut David quoted in the Yalkut Me’am Lo’ez in the name of the Alshich (I couldn’t find this in the Alshich – AC). 17 Zohar Chadash, No’ach 22b 18 Seder Olam Rabbah 1 19 2:3-4 2 a panic, to tear down the strength of the nations that raise their strength against the land of Judah.” According to the Talmud20 these four carpenters are ● Moshiach ben David ● Moshia
