B"H ‫ספורי‬ SEEING THE FACE OF ‫חסידים‬ THE REBBE RASHAB As told by R’ Nochum Shmarya Sasonkin A”H (R’ Shmerel Batumer): Kremenchug, Ukraine was called “The Yerushalayim of Ukraine,” because it was a city full of Talmidei Chachamim and G-d fearing Jews. When R’ Shmuel saw this wealthy man waiting to meet the Rebbe, he wouldn't allow him to enter for yechidus, since he had completely left the path of Yiddishkeit and had no (known) connection to the Rebbe. During WWI, he was one of the main suppliers of flour for the Russian army and he became friendly with the finance and defense ministers, as well as other high-ranking government officials. After my yechidus I became a fully practicing Jew, closed my mill on Shabbos, made my house Kosher, and became mekushar to the Rebbe.” ‫לע"נ הרה"ת ר' יוסף יצחק ב"ר אשר ז"ל‬ The pious Gurary brothers remained completely devoted to Torah and Chassidus, no matter how wealthy they became, and their houses were always open to the poor of the city. The Rebbe calmed the man down and finally, he was able to tell the Rebbe Rashab that he hadn't come for anything specific, he just wanted to see the Rebbe. Once, when this man was in Peterburg for business, he heard that the Rebbe Rashab had come to the city and was staying in one of the nicer hotels there. Even though he was entrenched in his worldly desires, he really wanted to see the Rebbe Rashab, the rabbi that everyone always spoke so highly of. The city was also famous for the wealthy Jews who lived there, including the well-known Gurary brothers, R’ Shmuel, R’ Nosson, and R’ Mendel A”H. R’ Shmuel Gurary had accompanied the Rebbe on his trip and he took it upon himself to organize the Rebbe's schedule.
