One Can Rely on Rabbi Shimon The Talmud says31 ‫“ – כְ דַ אי הּוא רַ בִ י שִ מְ עֹון לִ סְ מֹוְך עָ לָיו בִ שְ עַת הַ ְדחָ ק‬In cases of urgency one can rely on Rabbi Shimon(‘s Halachic rulings).” According to the commentaries, this also means that in times of trouble we can rely on the merit and prayers of Rabbi Shimon (see above) to save us from bad decrees.32 Passing and Rejoicing The story of the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai is related extensively in the Zohar. In addition, he considered himself and son Rabbi Eliezer, to be among the few b’nei aliyah – men of very high spiritual quality.8 Rabbi Yudan Was his Grandson The Jerusalem Talmud mentions 9 that Rabbi Yudan10 was the son of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s daughter. The commentaries offer several explanations to this apparent contradiction: ● These were two different rabbis with the same name.14 ● At first Rabbi Yehudah ben Geirim was an esteemed student of Rabbi Shimon, but later, his careless repetition of Rabbi Shimon’s words caused great hardship to Rabbi Shimon.15 Only Rabbi Akiva
