Man in his distortion of values and purpose, can and have done in the past create a sinister world philosophy that since the earth is so populated and there is not enough food and space for everyone, we must depopulate humanity or parts of it for the sake of preserving earth. Rather, we are celebrating the spiritual Man, that during one's rest from the curse and condemnation, he can once again find himself, his neshama, his inner meaning and purpose, and thereby reconnect with Hashem his creator which is the primary purpose and mission of life. Their motivational statement manifested a misdirection in life's priorities that they were flattering animals over humans, and placed their major interest and concern in their job and career before the role of raising a mishpacha in the derech of Hashem. The Torah here is talking about a scenario where an immoral or unjust government can come up with a decision that if an individual is found dumping his wastes in the river, not only should he be fined but he should be hung. By overreacting so harshly and inhumanely the government is giving "flattery" to the earth and river and demonstrating that physical objects possesses greater importance than a human who is created in Hashem's image. The problem with this is that these philosophies lead one to "reimagine" that earth is human just like everyone else, with rights and privileges, and therefore can take precedence over other human beings. If one embraces and adores objects more than the Tzelem Elokim for whom they were brought into existence, one is glorifying a subordinate servant in the place of its master. The answer is that we are not celebrating man's ability to work and toil the ground on our day of rest, for that is only a secondary goal and a ‫ בדיעבד‬situation.
