This is certainly so of Rashbi, and his instruction to write these teachings is the basis of the later revelations of the Inner dimension of Torah, eventually expressed in 1 Gal Einai 5737 – Edited by the Rebbe and published as Kuntres Lag BeOmer 5751 (1991). The Maharash3 states in a discourse on this verse, that it links with another verse: ‘This pile of stones will be a testimony’4 of which the Siddur with Chassidic Teachings explains that this is the Scriptural source for Lag B’Omer. In Kabbalistic terms this implies that the Tzimtzum, the key stage of ‘contraction’ or hiding of the Divine radiance at the very beginning of Creation, has the ultimate purpose not of concealment but of revelation. The verse from Psalms, ‘Open my eyes’ is asking that when I look at the more revealed aspects of Torah, the ‘garments’ and the ‘body’, I should be sensitive to the inner wonders which are hidden in it. The garments of Torah are the stories; the body is the halachic teachings, the revealed dimension; the soul is the Inner dimension and the soul of the soul is the most inward aspect. We now come to the other verse, concerning the pile of stones which was a barrier between Jacob and Laban, in other words, between the sacred and the profane. This day is when Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, known as Rashbi, passes away, and his great achievement was the revelation of the Inner Dimension of Torah. On Shavuot there was the Giving of the Torah, including all aspects of Torah, both Nigleh (Revealed Torah) and the Inner dimension. As the Zohar tells, us, on that day he revealed specially sacred teachings, which he instructed Rabbi Aba to transcribe.
