The following excerpt is from the Rebbe’s last Farbrengen (on the Shabbos before he suffered a stroke): … There are two life lessons alluded to in the Mitzvah of – "‫ י˙ הַ ּׁ˘ֶ ֶ˜ ל‬ƒˆ ‫˙ ינַ ˙ "מַ ֲח‬ƒ ּ¿‫ נ‬ƒ‫לּ ּמ וּ ד ¿ו הַ הוֹ ָר ָא ה מ‬ƒ ַ‫הָ ֶר מֶ ז ה‬ (the donation of) “Machatzis HaShekel” (the half-Shekel :‫ר ים‬ƒ ּ‫ׁ˘ֶ ֶיּ ׁ˘¿ נָ ם בָּ זֶ ה ׁ˘¿ נֵ י בֵּ א ו‬ levy - i.e. in the fact that every Jew only gave a half): ‫י ˘ׂ¿ ָר ֵא ל ׁ˘ֶ כָּ ל ֶא חָ ד ¿ו ֶא חָ ד‬ƒ ‫א( הַ ¿ד גָ ּ ׁ˘ַ ˙ ַא ח¿ ד ּו ָ˙ ם ׁ˘ֶ ל‬ A) This emphasizes Jewish unity - that every Jew ought ¿ ‫ר‬ƒ ָˆ ‫יּ ˘ׂ¿ ָר ֵא ל‬ƒ ƒ‫מ‬ ‫ ּ י˘ׁ ׁ˘ֶ ה וּ א ¿ל בַ דּ וֹ ֵא ינוֹ ֶא ָלּ א‬ƒ‫יך ֵל ידַ ע וּ ¿ל הַ ¿ר ג‬ to know and actually sense that alone he/she is merely “half”, and one’s wholeness is only by uniting with one’s ּ‫ע ם ֵר ֵע ה ו‬ƒ ˙ ּ‫ ¿˙ ַא ֲח ד ו‬ƒ‫ וּ ׁ˘¿ ֵל מ וּ ˙וֹ ¿ּ˙ ל וּ ָי ' ב¿ּ הַ ה‬,"˙‫ י‬ƒˆ ‫"מַ ֲח‬ fellow Jew (the Mitzvah of Ahavas Yisroel)... It is only ‫ׁ˘ֶ ַע ל ¿י ֵד י ˆֵ יר וּ פָ ם‬ ,(" ‫¿ל ֵר ֲע ָך כָּ מוֹ ָך‬ ˙ָּ ¿‫)"ו¿ ָא הַ ב‬ through our collective unity do we have a “full Shekel”, ."‫ "˘ׁ ֶ ֶ˜ ל הַ ּׁ˘ָ ֵל ם‬," ˘ׁ ‫ ¿˙ ַא ֲח ד וּ ָ˙ ם נַ ֲע ˘ֶׂ ה "˘ׁ ֶ ֶ˜ ל הַ ּ˜ ֶֹד‬ƒ‫¿ו ה‬ the sacred Shekel. ‫יּ ˘ׂ¿ ָר ֵא ל‬ƒ ƒ‫ב( הַ ¿ד גָ ּ ׁ˘ַ ˙ ַא ח¿ ד וּ ָ˙ ם ׁ˘ֶ ל כָּ ל ֶא חָ ד ¿ו ֶא חָ ד מ‬ B) The emphasis of the fact that every Jew is merely “half” ‫יּ ˘ׂ¿ ָר ֵא ל הֵ ם‬ƒ ֶ˘ׁ ‫ע ם הַ ָּ˜ דוֹ ׁ˘ בָּ ר ּו ¿ך ה ּו א‬ƒ ‫י ˘ׂ¿ ָר ֵא ל‬ƒ ‫ּו כ¿ ַל ל‬ on his/her own, and the other “half” is Hashem (so to "˙‫ י‬ƒˆ ‫ י˙" ¿ו הַ ָּ˜ דוֹ ׁ˘ בָּ ר וּ ¿ך ה וּ א ה וּ א "מַ ֲח‬ƒˆ ‫"מַ ֲח‬ speak). The Maggid (of Mezritch) has a well-known teaching ˜ ּ‫ּ יד ַע ל הַ ּפָ ס ו‬ƒ‫ כַּ ָיּ ד וּ ַע ּ˙ וֹ ַר ˙ הַ ּמַ ג‬,‫ יא וּ ˙ ַא חַ ˙ ׁ˘¿ ֵל מָ ה‬ƒˆ ¿‫מ‬ along these lines: When Hashem told Moshe to fashion to ‫ ׁ˘ֶ "חֲ ˆוֹ ˆ¿ רוֹ ˙" הֵ ם "חֲ ˆָ ֵא י‬,"˙ֹ‫"עֲ ˘ֵׂ ה ¿ל ָך ׁ˘¿ ֵּ˙ י ֲח ˆוֹ ˆ¿ ר‬ trumpets (Chatzotzros), this can be interpreted as ‫ ים ַע ל הַ ָּ˜ דוֹ ׁ˘ בָּ ר ּו ¿ך‬ƒ‫ ּו "˘ׁ ¿ ֵּ˙ י ֲח ˆוֹ ˆ¿ רוֹ ˙" רוֹ מ¿ ז‬,"˙ ֹ‫ˆ ּו רו‬ (Chatzo’i-Tzuros) meaning “two half forms”, i.e. ."‫הֶ ֵו י ˆ וּ ָר ה ׁ˘¿ ֵל מָ ה‬ These two explanations are interlinked: : ֹ‫ר ים זוֹ ב¿ּ זו‬ƒ ּ‫ר ים ¿˜ ׁ˘ ו‬ƒ ּ‫וּ ׁ˘¿ נֵ י הַ בֵּ א ו‬ Because when one senses one’s “halfn
