The Torah tells us, “U’smachtem lifnei Hashem Elokeichem shiv’as yamim — You shall rejoice before Hashem, your G-d, for seven days.”8 It also says, “Vesamachta bechagecha — You shall rejoice on your festival,”9 and concludes, “Vehayisa ach same’ach — and you shall be completely joyful.” 10 Here, the mitzvah of simchah is mentioned three times as opposed to the other Moadim. When we stop investing all of our energy into chasing temporary things and instead turn towards what is eternal — Torah, 8 Vayikra 23:40 9 Devarim 16:14 10 Devarim 16:15 11Alshich 23:34 7 mitzvos, and a relationship with Hashem — we discover a deeper and more lasting happiness.12 Adding to this idea, the Sfas Emes explains that the mitzvah of Sukkah teaches us bitachon — trust in Hashem. The Abarbanel explains this based on the words of the Torah: “And you shall rejoice on your festival, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, and the Levi, the 12 Simchas HaRegel, Limud 1 13 Sfas Emes, Sukkos 644 14 Abarbanel, Devarim 16:13–15 8 convert, the orphan, and the widow who are within your cities. One of the great highlights of Sukkos in the Beis HaMikdash was the Simchas Beis Hashoeivah, literally, “the joy of the water drawing.” On each night of Sukkos enormous vessels of water were drawn and brought to the Beis HaMikdash for the mitzvah of Nissuch HaMayim, the water libations. On each night of Sukkos the drawing of the water was accompanied by a celebration of such extraordinary joy that Chazal tell us, “Whoever has never seen the joy of the Simchas Beis Hashoeivah has never seen joy in his life.”17 From Chazal's description it is hard to comprehend what this celebration must have looked like. Many of the Moadim have a clear reason why we celebrate them. For example, on Pesach we commemorate the Exodus from Egypt and Shavuos, the giving of the Torah. Yet, Sukkos seems more difficult to understand what we are actually celebrating. The verse tells us, "You shall dwell in Sukkos for seven days."1 Yet, what is the underlying reason behind leaving our houses for a week and living in wooden structures? Chazal2 cite a dispute between Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Akiva. Rabbi Eliezer explains that Sukkos commemorates the Ananei HaKavod, the Clouds of Glory that surrounded Klal Yisrael in the wilderness and protected them in miraculous ways. Rabbi Akiva, however, holds that Sukkos commemorates the simple wooden huts that Klal Yisrael lived in. Let us first explore the reason behind…
