The Rebbe explains that after the sense of desolation experienced in the month of Av, before Elul, in which we remember the destruction of both Temples, there has to be a renewal of our personal relationship with G-d, expressed in the words ‘my Beloved is to me’ [which is manifested on Rosh Hashanah, Yom 1 Aniy LeDodi Parshat Re’eh 5735 (1975) not edited by the Rebbe. One might say that this means, during the month of Elul which begins in the coming week, not only do we become more aware of Hashem as the source of all existence, but we also have an intimation of the infinite ‘beauty’ of the Divine, making us long to come closer to Him, through following the teachings and laws of His beautiful Torah. The discourse explains that ‘I am to my Beloved’ means the ‘arousal from below’, the steps that the individual Jew takes towards Hashem, called ‘my Beloved’, during the month of Elul, through extra attention to the details of Jewish teaching. Hence in Likkutei Torah, containing discourses of Rabbi Shneur Zalman, in the section for Parshat Re’eh there is a famous discourse explaining the nature of the month of Elul. Then on Rosh Hashanah, at the beginning of the next month, there is, so to speak, the response from Above, from the Divine, expressed in the words ‘my Beloved is to me’. Further, the image of ‘jewels’ and ‘beauty’, mentioned earlier, manifesting the beauty of the individual, can also be understood as manifesting the beauty of the Divine. The words ‘I am to my Beloved, and my Beloved is to me’, in Hebrew ‫אני לדודי‬ ‫ ודודי לי‬have the initial letters ‫ אלול‬Elul, the coming Hebrew month. They bring out the innate beauty of the bride, and in a comparable way, the Thirteen Attributes reveal more the innate spiritual beauty and holiness of each Jew.
