CHABAD ‫ב"ה‬ RESEARCH UNIT Summaries of points of the Rebbe’s Chassidic Discourses ‫בלי אחריות כלל וכלל‬ ‫ד"ה גן נעול פרשת תזריע מצורע ג' אייר תשמ''ז בלתי מוגה‬ Published for Shabbat Sedra Tazria Metzora 1 Iyar 5783, 22 April 20231 THE LOCKED GARDEN A MAAMAR (DISCOURSE) BY THE REBBE MAHARASH2 BEGINS ‘MY SISTER MY BRIDE IS A LOCKED GARDEN, a locked spring, a sealed fountain.’3 The Maharash cites the translation and commentary by the Aramaic Targum, which describes the ‘garden’ as the Garden of Eden. 7 The discourse presents several examples of Mitzvot coming before Torah, such as the Mitzvot of Pesach and counting the Omer preceding the Giving of the Torah on Shavuot, or in daily terms, the Mitzvot of the Shema, Tefilin and Prayer preceding the study of Torah. Similarly, says the discourse, the Jewish people are the garden, but they are ‘locked’, they reserve themselves for G-d, meaning the only delight which they enjoy is that which comes from G-dliness. Further, the Tzemach Tzedek5 connects the word for ‘spring’, gal, with the same word in another verse where it means ‘reveal’: open/reveal my eyes that I might see wonders from Your Torah6’. As a result of this bond, we the Jewish people respond, as a bride to her groom, and resolve that we will accept delight from no other source, only from G-d. This is an exalted level, discussed by the Maharash in a third discourse on this verse, which focuses on the later phrase ‘a locked spring’. The discourse explains ‘portion’ as the ‘portion’ of G-d which, so to speak, flows to the Jewish people in their marital intimacy together. Another commentary4 on this verse does not define the ‘garden’ as the Garden of Eden, but as an ordinary garden which has an owner. G-d grants the Mitzvot to the Jewish people as a tangible benefit which they can enjoy, and this forms the bond of betrothal.
