Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein 2023 / 5784 MESHECH CHOCHMAH Parshas Miketz Pharaoh’s Two Dreams ‫וְ הִ נֵּה שֶ ׁבַ ע פָ ּרוֹת אֲחֵ רוֹת עֹ לוֹת ַאחֲרֵ יהֶ ן מִ ן הַ יְאֹ ר ָרעוֹת מַ ְראֶ ה וְ ַדּקוֹת בָ ּשָ ׂר וַתַ ּעֲמֹ ְדנָה‬ ‫אֵ צֶ ל הַ פָ ּרוֹת עַ ל שְ ׂפַ ת הַ יְאֹ ר‬ And behold, seven other cows emerged after them from the Nile, of ugly appearance and emaciated flesh, and they stood next to the cows on the banks of the Nile. Yosef himself explains the significance of Pharaoh having two dreams about the same thing: ֹ‫כִ ּי נָכוֹן הַ ָדּבָ ר מֵ עִ ם הָ אֱֹלהִ ים ּומְ מַ הֵ ר הָ אֱֹלהִ ים לַ עֲ שֹ ׂתו‬ For the matter stands ready before God, and God is hastening to bring it about.1 The repetition of the dream signifies that it will definitely occur, and soon. Commenting on the meaning of the thin cows and thin ears of grain, Yosef says: ...‫וְ שֶ ׁבַ ע הַ פָ ּרוֹת הָ ַרּקוֹת וְ הָ ָרעֹ ת הָ עֹ ֹלת ַאחֲרֵ יהֶ ן שֶ ׁבַ ע שָ ׁנִים הֵ נָּה וְ שֶ ׁבַ ע הַ שִ ׁבֳ ּלִ ים הָ ֵרקוֹת‬ ‫יִהְ יּו שֶ ׁבַ ע שְ ׁנֵי ָרעָ ב‬ The seven thin and weak cows that emerged after them – they are seven years; and the seven thin ears of grain… will be seven years of famine.6 We see that while Yosef specifies that the thin ears of grain “will be seven years of famine,” when it comes to the seven thin cows, he states more generally that “they are seven years.” The meaning behind this differentiation is that since the second dream refers to other lands, Yosef was able to state unequivocally that there would be seven years of famine.
