He told the taskmasters and overseers, ‫"לֹא‬ "‫תֹ אסִ פוּ ן לָ ֵתת ֶּתבֶּ ן לָ עָ ם לִ לְ בּ ֹ ן ַהלְּ בֵ נִ ים ּכִ ְתמוֹ ל ׁשִ לְ ׁשֹ ם ֵהם יֵ לְ כוּ וְ קֹ ׁשְ ׁשוּ לָ ֶּהם ֶּתבֶּ ן‬, they may no longer provide the slaves with the straw they needed for making bricks, and instead they should force them to gather their own straw. This is what Pharaoh was referring to when he said ‫"וְ ַאל־יִ ׁשְ עוּ בְּ ִדבְ ֵרי־‬ "‫ ׁשָ ֶּקר‬- "and they should no longer be occupied with false ideas." The Power of Assembly Reb Dovid of Lelov explained that Pharaoh's enslavement of the Jewish people was not simply motivated by a desire to oppress and exploit them. Rather, his primary concern was that, despite living in Egypt for generations, the Jewish people had maintained their ‫ ְק ֻד ׁ ּשָ ה‬and ‫ ֱאמוּ נָ ה‬and refused to assimilate into Egyptian society, as we say in the Hagaddah ‫ ׁשֶּ ָהיוּ יִ שְ ָר ֵאל ְמצֻ ָיּ נִ ים ׁשָ ם‬, the Yidden were distinguishable there. Parshah Insights 5 This is hinted at in the apparently superfluous ‫ א‬in Pharaoh’s words “ ‫לֹא‬ ‫( ”תֹ אסִ פוּ ן‬You shall not continue), which tells us that it can also be read as ‫לֹא‬ ‫ ֵּת ָא ֵספוּ ן‬-You shall no longer assemble, ‫ לָ ֵתת
