(Some don’t eat fish on Rosh Hashanah as the word for fish [‫ ]דג‬is similar to the word for worry [‫]דאגה‬.35) The text (for those that recite it) is: ‫יְהִ י ָרצֹון מִ לְ פָ נֶיָך שֶ נִ פרֶ ה וְנִ ְרבֶ ה כְ דָ גִ ים‬, - “May it be Your will that we be fruitful and multiply like fish.” 34 It is possible that the reason for this is that the apple is considered more “preferred” at this time since we only say the Yehi Ratzon on the apple. The accompanying prayer (for those that say it) is ‫יְהִ י ָרצֹון מִ לְ פָ נֶיָך ּה׳ אֱֹלקֵ ינּו וֵאל ֵֹקֵ י אֲבֹותֵ ינּו‬ ‫ּׁשֶ יִרבּו זְ כּויֹותֵ נו‬, which means, “May it be Your will, L-rd our G-d and the G-d of our fathers, that our merits increase.” Some say: ‫יְהִ י ָרצֹון מִ לְ פָ נֶיָך שתגזור עלינו גזירות טובות וגם שייגזרו אויבינו‬, - “May it be Your will that You decree upon us good decrees and that our enemies be cut off.” (The Hebrew word for carrot is ‫)גֶ זֶר‬ ● Leeks In Hebrew, the word for leeks is karti, signifying that our enemies should be cut off. Those that recite a prayer should say ‫ ׁשֶ ּיִ כָ ְרתּו אֹויְבֵ ינּו‬,‫יְהִ י ָרצֹון מִ לְ פָ נֶיָך ּה אֱֹלקֵ ינּו וֵאל ֵֹקֵ י אֲבֹותֵ ינּו‬ ‫ ּוְׂשֹונְ אֵ ינּו וְ כָל מְ בַ קְ ׁשֵ י ָרעָ תֵ נו‬which means “May it be Your will, L-rd our G-d and the G-d of our fathers, that our enemies, haters, and those who wish evil upon us shall be cut down.” ● Dates The word for date, tamar, also means to finish off (tam).
