We would expect that either all three branches of the family of Levi should be mentioned in Parshas Bamidbar since they already began there with the counting of the Kehas branch of the family or else Parshas Naso should have begun with the counting of the Leviyim and should include all three branches of the family! However, this parsha does not seem to fit into the basic topics of the opening chapters of Sefer Bamidbar, which primarily deal with the topics of national import, primarily the size, roles and position of the respective shevotim in the Jewish nation at this point in history. Here is a great nation, consisting of over 600,000 males of military age — and yet the Torah keeps on stressing over and over again the idea of, — למשפחותם לבית אבותםthat this nation and these shevotim are all composed of family units. בשעה שהכהנים מברכים העם “ – לברכה ויהיו פניהם כנגד פני הכהנים ולא יסתכלו בהםWhen the Kohanim bless the congregation … the congregation should pay attention to the blessing, their faces should be facing the faces of the Kohanim, however, they shouldn’t look at the Kohanim”. However, the Mikdash Mordechai explains that there is a very strong connection between the matter of the sotah and the matter of the shevotim: The linking factor is the concept of, “ – למשפחותם לבית אבותםaccording to their families, according to their father’s homes”. Regarding the korbonos brought by a nazir at the conclusion of his status of being a nazir, the Torah says (Bamidbar 6:11): ועשה הכהן אחד לחטאת ואחד לעלה וכפר עליו מאשר חטא על הנפש- “The Kohen shall make one as a sin- offering and one as an olah-offering, and he shall provide him atonement for having sinned regarding the soul…”. Rashi quoting the Gemara in Chagigah (16a) writes: המסתכל בכהנים בשעת שנושאין את כפיהן עיניו כהות “ – לפי שהשכינה שורה על ידיהןOne who looks at the Kohen’s hands during Birchas Kohanim will turn blind, as the Shechinah rests upon the Kohanim’s hands”. Tosfos in Chagigah (16a) asks on Rashi, that surely the Shechinah only rests on the Kohanim’s hands when Birchas Koh
