It was during the days of Bein HaMetzarim (the Three Weeks), and in his talks the Rebbe encouraged the Chassidim to increase in charity, tzedakah, in order to fulfill the verse: “Zion shall be redeemed through justice, and her penitent through righteousness (b’tzdaka).” (Isaiah 1:27) “We must remember,” the Chozeh empha- sized, “the verse, ‘Hashem makes poor and makes rich.’ The meaning of this verse is that in a single moment, the Holy One, blessed be He, can impoverish a wealthy man, and in a single moment He can enrich a destitute man.” As the Rebbe said these words, the chassid felt the Reb- be was looking directly at him.
