Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein 2023 / 5783 Pshuto PSHUTOShel Mikra SHEL MIKRA From the Teachings of Rav Yehuda Copperman zt”l Parshat Tetzaveh Halachah LeSha’ah and Halachah L’Dorot ‫וְ כִ ּפֶ ר ַאהֲ רֹן עַ ל קַ ְרנֹ תָ יו ַאחַ ת ּבַ ּׁשָ נָה מִ ַּדם חַ ּטַ את הַ ּכִ ּפ ִֻרים ַאחַ ת ּבַ ּׁשָ נָה יְ כַּפֵ ר עָ לָיו‬ ’‫לְ דֹ רֹתֵ יכֶם קֹ ֶדׁש קָ ָדׁשִ ים הּוא לַה‬ Aharon shall atone on its corners once a year, from the blood of the sin-offering of the atonements once a year he shall atone on it for your generations, it is holy of holies to Hashem. mizbeyach): This Mizbeach was not mentioned together with the other keilim in Parshat Terumah, for the purpose of this kli was not to cause the Shechinah to dwell among us, as was the case with the other keilim, concerning which it says (Shemot 25:8–9) “‫וְ ׁשָ כַ נְ ּתִ י‬ ‫ ּכְ כ ֹל אֲ ׁשֶ ר אֲ נִ י מַ רְ אֶ ה או ֹתְ ָך אֵ ת ּתַ בְ נִ ית הַ ּמִ ׁשְ ּכָ ן וְ אֵ ת ּתַ בְ נִ ית ּכָ ל ּכֵ לָ יו‬.‫ — ּבְ תו ֹכָ ם‬I will dwell in their midst. 29:43) “‫— וְ נ ֹעַ דְ ּתִ י ׁשָ ּמָ ה לִ בְ נֵי יִ ׂשְ רָ אֵ ל‬I will meet there with Bnei Yisrael,”2 and Moshe similarly attested3 (Vayikra 9:6) “‫זֶה הַ ּדָ בָ ר אֲ ׁשֶ ר צִ ּוָה ה’ ּתַ עֲ ׂשּו וְ יֵרָ א אֲ לֵ יכֶ ם‬ ‫ — ’ּכְ בו ֹד ה‬this is the matter that Hashem has commanded you to do, and the Glory of Hashem will appear to you.” Rather, the role of this Mizbeach was to give honor to Hashem after He accepts with favor the avodah of His people (through) the morning and afternoon korbanot,4 and to seek His Countenance (“‫ )”לשחר פניו‬through the offering of ketoret, as it says (Divrei HaYamim 1, 16:29) “‫הָ בּו לַ ה’ ּכְ בו ֹד ׁשְ מו ֹ ׂשְ אּו‬ ‫ — מִ נְ חָ ה ּוב ֹאּו לְ פָ נָיו‬Give unto Hashem the Glory of His Name, take up an offering5 and come before Him.” With these words, written in his characteristic brief style, the Seforno lays out before us three distinct functions (“three dinim”) that are related to the Mishkan and its components, as well as an explanation of their distribution between the Parshiyot of Terumah and Tetzaveh. For example, the Torah says (Devarim 25:4) “ֹ ‫ — ֹלא תַ חְ ס ֹם ׁשו ֹר ּבְ דִ יׁשו‬you shall not muzzle an ox while it threshes.” Since the words “lo tachsom” came first, the meaning is expanded to Rabbi Immanuel Bernste
