R’ Gronem explained that even though many Jewish sages had accomplished these admirable traits without learning Chassidus, they were able to do so because they were naturally predisposed to wonderful character traits and their learning (Niglah) only enhanced and beautified them. However, R’ Gronem went on, most people do not have such naturally splendid characters, and if they don’t rid themselves of their evil and lowly behaviors, their Torah learning will end up enhancing their lowly traits, such as haughtiness. R’ Gronem explained to the Tmimim at the farbrengen that even though this Chassid was not born with the natural capabilities of having such deep and focused concentration, through learning Chassidus, he was able to change his very nature. All of R’ Gronem’s stories and their explanations were always filled with rich substance, and he took great care to share this wealth with others, exactly as he himself had learned from great Chassidim, without changing a single detail. B"H ‫ספורי‬ CHASSIDUS IN THE ‫חסידים‬ GLASSES STORE As told by R’ Nochum Shmarya Sasonkin A”H (R’ Shmerel Batumer): R’ Shmuel Gronem Esterman A”H was the Mashpia in Tomchei Tmimim in Lubavitch in the early 1900’s. The shop was packed with customers so one of the attendants quickly gave the elderly Chassid a pair of glasses to try on before immediately getting distracted by the many other (louder) shoppers. The Chassid spent so long in dveykus, that he only came out of the trance-like meditative state, that learning a maamar can bring a Chassid to, when the clerks began closing the store! One farbrengen, R’ Gronem spoke about the topic of bitul (self nullification) and tmimus (integrity), both of which are foundational concepts of Chabad Chassidus. Forced to wait for further service, the Chassid took out a booklet of Chassidus from his pocket, went to a side of the store, and began learning a maamar. The sayings of the Rabbeim and their Chassidim were so clear to R’ Gronem that when he repeated them to his students, he did so with accuracy.
