Depending on the explanation, either there was a special place in the earth that swallowed them so they didn’t fully descend into the abyss, or they actually survived, and served in the Bais Hamikdash (Shmuel Hanavi, the prophet Samuel, descended from Korach.) The people who witnessed Pinchas kill Zimri intimated that Pinchas was an angry, violent person, and that’s why he killed him. Onkelos explains, “The name of the daughter of the wife of Asher was Serach.” Having been the only daughter of a Jewish man, she, like the daughters of Tzelophchad mentioned later, would be able to inherit in her father’s stead. “And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serach.” (Bamidbar 26:46) This short verse might seem quite commonplace and a reader might glance right over it, but it’s unique enough that the meforshim speak about it in detail. “ka’aileh - Like this shall you do daily for seven days…” (Bamidbar 28:24) A popular verse with those who sing the familiar tune along with the person reading the Torah, most people haven’t thought about what it means. Rashi says, “Because she was still alive at this time, she is counted here.” Our Sages tell us Serach lived a very long time, as a result of a bracha from Yaakov Avinu, and eventually went into Gan Eden alive. While they may have been able to rationalize their father’s battle as a being holy, when they saw Dasan and Aviram fighting, they realized how futile, revolting, and dangerous it was - so they desisted.
