The discourse explains that the eagle, which is one of the four faces of the angelic beings in the Merkava, the Chariot in the vision of Ezekiel ch.19, represents great Mercy, relating to and highest of the exalted Thirteen Attributes of Mercy. This is the atmosphere of joy at the Joy of the Water Drawing, in which the Hasidim (ie Zaddikim) and the Men of Good Deeds dance, with burning torches in their hands, inspiring and transforming the huge crowd of men and women. Rabbi Haim Vital, the great 16th century Kabbalist, foremost disciple of Rabbi Yitzhak Luria, explains that at the beginning of existence the radiance of the Infinite was so intense that the worlds could not be created. The leading figures in the community, the ‘Hasidim and men of good deeds’ would dance, watched by crowds of men, and also of women, who would be on a special balcony built over the courtyard4. It is attained by the men (and women) of good deeds, and by the whole Jewish people, who have a struggle, who fall sometimes, but despite that can also soar like the eagle in the heavens. The one who falls can soar in heaven… Further, having achieved this, the person might come to a level higher than would be reached simply by following the Commandments of the Torah. To illuminate this further, the Rebbe presents ideas from a discourse6 by the Rebbe MaHaRaSh7, Rabbi Shmuel Schneersohn, the fourth Lubavitcher Rebbe, whose Yahrzeit is 13 Tishrei. People are faced by the struggle between right and wrong, trying to fulfil the teaching of the Torah, despite temptations of various kinds which draw us in the opposite direction. To explain this phenomenon, that deliberate sins can become merits, the Rebbe’s discourse presents a profound Chassidic-Kabbalistic teaching from the discourse by the MaHaRaSh.
