And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I placed the cup on Pharaoh's palm." In the dream, the butler corresponds to the windpipe which draws down the intellectual understand from the mind to cool down the fiery passion of the heart and quench its thirst. When one wants to atone for all the sins of their past, and undergo the Kapparah that these punishments bring, one must first “drink the wine.” Just like one who is about to be executed drinks wine to get out of their mind, in order to accept the atonement and punishments, one must drink the “Intoxicating Wine.” When a Neshama ascends to Gan Eden, it must undergo Tahara to erase all their memories of this world. But the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, and he forgot him…It came to pass at the end of two full years that Pharaoh was dreaming, and behold, he was standing by the Nile. And behold, seven other cows were coming up after them from the Nile, of ugly appearance and lean of flesh, and they stood beside the cows [which were] on the Nile bank. But everyone is capable of meditating, on their own level, that all of creation are just the words of Hashem, and realize how insignificant all of creation is. For this, one needs another level of wine: “Intoxicating Wine.” Before execution, wine was given to the people in order to help them bear the pain of death. They have the ability to extract themselves from their mind and focus with strength and a bitter soul until he erases all memories of his past sins. This wine is called the “Joyous Wine.” This level applies to someone who has been on the straight and narrow path and never sinned in their life. Summary: The butler produces two types of wine: 1- For those on the straight path: just need to squeeze the grape through self imposed humility. Then, he can daven to Hashem from the depths of his heart with the bitterness over his past, and his pain over Hashem’s concealed presence.
