Commenting on the verse,1 “Love your neigh- ‫ אוֹ יפְ ן ּפָ סוּקא "וְ ָא ַה ְב ָּת לְ ֵר ֲע ָך‬.‫א‬ bor as yourself,” Rashi quotes the teaching of Rabbi ‫כָּ מוֹ ָך" בְ ּ ֶרענְ גְ ט ַר ׁשִ "י ֶדעם מַ ֲאמָ ר פוּן‬ Akiva in Toras Kohanim,2 “This is a great general ‫ַרבִ ּ י ֲעקִ יבָ א (אִ ין ּתוֹ ַרת כּ ֲֹהנִ יםב) "זֶ ה‬ principle of the Torah.” ."‫כְּ לַ ל ָגּ דוֹ ל בַ ּ ּתוֹ ָרה‬ The supercommentaries3 note that Rabbi Akiva’s ‫ ַאז ַרבִ ּ י‬,‫מְ פָ ְר ׁשִ יםג זַ יְ ינֶ ען מְ ַב ֵאר‬ intent is to explain how great the mitzvah of aha­ ‫ֲעקִ יבָ א ווִ יל ַארוֹ יסְ ְבּ ֶרענְ גֶ ען ִדי‬ vas Yisrael, the love of one’s fellow Jew, is – that it is ‫גְ רוֹ יסְ ַקיְ יט פוּן ֶדער מִ צְ וָ ה – ַאז ָדאס‬ an all-encompassing concept relevant to the entire ‫ ווִ י‬,‫ִאיז ַאן ִענְ יָ ן כְּ לָ לִ י ִאין גַאנְ ץ ּתוֹ ָרה‬ Torah. ‫ְסנֵ י לְ ַח ְב ָרךְ לָ א ַת ֲע ֵביד זוֹ ִהיא כָּ ל‬ This is the entire Torah; the rest is commentary.” ."‫ַה ּתוֹ ָרה כֻ לָּ ּה וְ ִאידָ ְך ּפֵ ירו ּׁשָ א הוּא‬ Explanation is necessary: Clearly, Rashi’s ‫ ּפִ ירו ּׁש‬:‫ַדארְ ף מֶ ען פַ ארְ ׁשְ ֵטיין‬ commentary is not a book of ethics, intended to mo- ‫ נִ יט ַא‬,ֹ‫ כִּ פְ ׁשוּטו‬,‫ַר ׁשִ "י ַעל ַה ּתוֹ ָרה ִאיז‬ tivate and enhance a Jew’s observance of the mitzvos. ‫מוּסָ ר־סֵ פֶ ר אוֹ יף צוּ מְ עוֹ ֵרר זַ יְ ין ִאידְ ן‬ Instead, in explanation of the purpose of his com- ‫ נָ אר – ווִ י ַר ׁשִ "י‬,‫צוּ קִ ּיוּם ַה ּמִ צְ וֹ ת‬ mentary,5 Rashi states, “I have come solely to explain ‫ַאלֵ ייןה גִ יט ַארוֹ יס ֶדעם כְּ לַ ל – "וַ ֲאנִ י‬ the straightforward meaning of Scripture.” ,"‫לֹא ָבאתִ י אֶ ּלָ א לִ פְ ׁשוּטוֹ ׁשֶ ל מִ קְ ָרא‬ True, we can – and thus we must – derive from ‫[פוּן ּפִ ירו ּׁש ַר ׁשִ "י ֶקען מֶ ען‬ Rashi’s commentary “wondrous insights”6 in all the ‫(וּבְ מֵ ילָ א – ַדארְ ף מֶ ען) ַארוֹ יסְ נֶ עמֶ ען‬ different disciplines of the Torah, even the Torah’s ‫"עִ נְ יָ נִ ים מוּפְ לָ ִאים"ו ִאין ַאלֶע ֶחלְ ֵקי‬ mystical secrets, “the wine of the Torah.”7 And, certain- ;‫ַה ּתוֹ ָרה (בִ ּ יז ֲאפִ ילוּ ָרזִ ין דְּ אוֹ ַריְ ָתא‬ ly, Ra
