RASHI’S PLACEMENT OF COMMENTARY In our parshah,1 when Moshe recounts how he ascended {Mount Sinai} to receive the { לּוחֹותTablets} from Hashem, the terms “the { לּוחֹותtablets} of stone” and “the { לּוחֹותtablets} of the covenant,” appear several times. [Between these verses, this word appears several times — in verse 10: “And Hashem gave me the two לּוחֹ תof stone, written…”; in verse 11: “At the end of forty days and forty nights, Hashem gave me the two לֻחֹ תof stone, the לֻחֹותof the covenant”; in verse 15: “I turned and descended from the mountain… and the two לּוחֹ תof the covenant were on my two hands”; {and finally} in verse 17: “I grasped the two לֻחֹ ת... and I shattered them before your eyes.” Thus, we must conclude that Rashi refers either to one of these specific verses, or {more generally} to the word “ ”לּוחֹ תwritten in its deficient form throughout all these verses.] But evidently, he is not referring to the two instances where the word “”לּוחֹ ת appears in deficient form at the beginning of verse 9: “When I ascended the mountain to take the לּוחֹ תof stone, the לּוחֹ תof the covenant...” because Rashi writes his explanation of the word “ ”לּוחֹ תafter his commentary on “And I remained on the mountain,” which appears later in verse 9. 29 | Ekev | Sichah 1 | 2 Perhaps we can answer that Rashi offers this explanation specifically on verse 11 (or 17), where two vavs are missing from the word, “{ — ”לֻחֹ תthe vav after the ches} and the vav after the lamed — as opposed to verse 9 (or 10) where “ ”לּוחֹ תis written with a vav after the lamed. Therefore, Rashi explains that the verse intends to emphasize the deficiency: “ לֻחֹ תis written, indicating that they were both equal.” For this reason, Rashi does not explain this in verse 9 of our parshah — “When I ascended the mountain to take the לּוחֹ תof stone, the לּוחֹ תof the covenant” — because in this verse the word “ ”לּוחֹ תappears both times in deficient spelling. [On this basis we can understand why the aforementioned questions cannot be answered by sugg
