In the poetic words of “tefilas geshem” recited on that normally joyous occasion, we prayed to Hashem: ‫"זְכֹור ׁשְ נֵים ָע ָשֹר ׁשְ ָבטִ ים‬ "‫ ּבְ צִ דְ ָקם חֹון חַ ׁשְ רַת ָמיִם‬,‫ ֵּתפֶן ּכִ י נַפְ ֵׁשנּו ָאפְ פּו ָמיִם‬,‫ ּתֹולְ דֹותָ ם נִׁשְ ּפְַך ָּד ָמם ָע ֶליָך ּכַּמַ יִם‬,‫ ֶׁשהִ מְ ּתַ קְ ָּת ָלמֹו מְ רִ ירּות מַ יִם‬,‫—ׁשֶ ֶהעֱבַרְ ָּת ּבְ גִ זְרַת מַ יִם‬remember the twelve tribes whom You took through the split waters, that You sweetened for them the bitterness of the water. This reminded me of a valuable lesson from the Gemara (Shabbas 118b): ‫ יודע אני בעצמי‬,‫ מימי לא עברתי על דברי חברי‬,‫"ואמר רבי יוסי‬ "‫ אם אומרים לי חבירי עלה לדוכן אני עולה‬,‫—שאיני כהן‬and Rabbi Yossi said: In all my days, I have never disobeyed the words of my colleagues.
