(Yes, sadly it’s a tale as old as time…) It seems strange then, that in his prayers, Moshe would ask that Hashem walk in our midst, “because they are an “am k’shei oref.”” Why would Moshe use the very thing Hashem criticized us about as part of a request for mercy from Him? Now, however, after his revelation of G-d’s attributes and Divine glory (as he had requested, “Show me please, Your ways,”) he realized that if the Jewish People only experienced Divine Mercy, they would kick off any connection to Hashem and leave His path. Hashem told Moshe He could not remain in the midst of Klal Yisrael because they were an “am k’shei oref, a stiff-necked people.” Rashi explains this to mean they turned the back of their necks to those who would rebuke them. He asks: Why does the Torah call the half- shekel that averts a plague “machatzit” (‫ )מחצית‬and not “chatzi” (‫?)חצי‬ There are two fantastic answers to share, both of which are built around the same premise. Don’t read my name in any book that will recall them!” That may not have been the only reason, but it’s one that teaches us great sensitivity to others, even when they have faltered. With special thanks to Danny Azarfar, we’d like to share two concepts on the half-shekel which can make each of us more whole and greater than the sum of our parts. After the sin and Moshe’s pleading with Hashem, Hashem revealed thirteen attributes to Moshe and instructed him to recall these when mercy is needed for the Jews. When reading the Parsha, you may note that the first two portions read on Shabbos are much longer, and the remaining five rather short. When he loves what it can do to help others and bring good to the world, it is greater than his own body as it can go much farther than he physically can. Both of these things should cause us to return to Hashem with all our hearts, and then He can return to us, with the building of the Bais HaMikdash.
